The beloved New Rochelle-based station (1460 AM) discontinued all programming effective on Thursday night, Sept. 7, over a year after its owner, William O’Shaughnessy, died in late May 2022 at the age of 84.

The closure was confirmed by Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner, who had a weekly show on the station for 25 years.

Feiner called the station's closure a "big loss to Westchester County."

"What made WVOX so special is that no one ever told a host of a program what to say," Feiner said, adding, "Everyone with differing opinions could express them to the listeners of WVOX."

The station is owned by Whitney Radio, which O’Shaughnessy had been the president of. He presided over WVOX for 67 years.

It had been one of the last independently owned radio stations in the New York metro area along with WVIP, which O’Shaughnessy had also owned.
